If you want to travel from Muscat, the modern capital of Oman, to the ancient inland city of Nizwa, taking a state-run bus is economical and enables you to experience local life in depth. Based on my personal experience, this detailed ticket purchase guide will help you plan your itinerary easily and start a journey through ancient and modern times.

I. Offline ticket purchase (on-site purchase)

This is the most common and direct way, and it is suitable for travelers with flexible itineraries.

  1. Main ticket purchase stations

Azaiba Bus Station Azaiba Bus Station: This isThe most important departure station, most of the shuttle buses to Nizwa depart from here. The station is about 3 kilometers away from the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, and the taxi fare is about 1.5 riyals.

Rouvy Station (Ruwi Station)WithSavoie Station Sahwa Station: You can also buy tickets to get on the bus, but the frequency may not be as frequent as Azaiba Station.

Muscat International Airport: The bus will set up a stop at the airport to pick up passengers. If you want to go directly to Nizwa after arrival, you can buy a ticket at the bus stop outside the arrival hall of the airport.

  2. Ticket purchase process and key points:

Find a ticket window: Take Azaiba Station as an example. The station facilities may be relatively simple. You can directly enter the station to find the staff.

Inform the destination: Explain “Nizwa fort” to the staff, the fare is 2.5 riyals one way and 5 riyals round trip, and it is recommended to buy a one-way ticket first.

Prepare cash: Offline ticket purchaseCash payment only acceptedPlease be sure to prepare change in advance.

Ticket voucher: There are usually no traditional paper tickets after purchasing tickets. Staff mayUse your phone to take a picture of the note with the shift information on itAs voucher, or only verbally. The driver will check the names on the passenger list when boarding the bus.

Seats and departures: The bus is in good condition, and there is no fixed seat number. You can sit at will after getting on the bus.

2. Online ticket purchase (official website booking)

Suitable for travelers who like to plan ahead and secure their itinerary.

  1. Official Website

Oman’s state-run bus company namedMwasalat, its booking official website is: https://mwasalat.om

Important Tips: This website is inExtremely slow access within China, may require a lot of patience or the help of network tools. But it is normal to visit abroad (including other countries in the Middle East).

  2. Ticket purchase process and skills

Inquiry shift: Even if you don’t buy tickets immediately, it is recommended to check on the official website in advanceDeparture schedule, as a reference for offline travel. The outbound flights of Azaiba Station mainly include: 6 o’clock, 6: 30, 8 o’clock (can stop at the “bridge side” station), 10 o’clock, 12 o’clock (can stop at the “bridge side” station), etc.; Firq Station return flights are: 12:17, 14:30, 14:50, 17:10, 18:20, 20:20.

    Select Site

    Starting point: Select Muscat (Azaiba).

Endpoint: There are two main options:

Nizwa (Firq): This isNizwa’s main station (Firq Station), the drive takes about 2.5 hours. After arrival, you need to take a taxi to Nizwa Castle (about 10 minutes’ drive).

Nizwa (Bridge: This is a closer toNizwa CastleAt the “bridgeside” stop, you can walk about 10-15 minutes to the castle after getting off the bus. But the frequency that stops at this stationVery limited, be sure to check carefully.

Payment and ticket collection: Supports international credit card (e.g. Visa/Mastercard) online payment. But it may not be possible to complete the payment at home (it is feasible to try in other Middle Eastern countries). After successful payment, you will receive an electronic ticket (PDF). 3. Practical tips and itinerary reference

About ticket source: There are relatively few tourists in Oman, and you can usually buy tickets for the latest flight when you arrive at the station temporarily, unless there are local holidays. For safety, tickets can be purchased one day in advance.

Full travel time: After departing from Azaiba Station, the bus will stop at Muscat Airport and another nearby station to pick up passengers, and then drive onto the expressway. Arriving at Firq station in Nizwa after about 2.5 hours, the driver will take a 30-minute break. Continue driving after a break for about 15 minutes to the “Bridgeside” stop. If your destination is a castle, it is easiest to get off here.

Return Tips: This is the key to itinerary planning, please be sure to pay attention to:

  1. Confirm the departure time in advance: Before returning to Muscat from Nizwa, be sure to confirm the exact departure time with the station staff or driver. The interval between afternoon shifts may be long, and you will have to wait a long time if you miss one shift.

  2. Select a pickup location: Returning to Muscat from the “bridgeside” stop near Nizwa CastleFew shifts, it is not recommended to wait here. The safest way is to go back toNizwa Firq StationBus, there are relatively more trains.

  3. Reserve traffic time: Return from Nizwa Castle to Firq StationIt is more difficult to take a taxi, the taxi software may not take the order, and it will take time to stop the car on the roadside. Please start preparing to return to the station at least 40-60 minutes in advance.

  4. Efficient alternatives: If you find it inconvenient to wait for a bus at Firq Station, there are often many taxis (carpooling) waiting outside the station.Carpooling back to downtown Muscat, such as near the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, is an efficient and cost-effective option, the drive takes about 2 hours, and the per capita cost is about 3 riyals. Usually, the bus can be departed if 3-4 people are collected.

In short, taking a bus between Muscat and Nizwa is a safe, economical and local transportation option. Bring cash and keep a leisurely mood, and you can smoothly integrate into the daily rhythm of Oman and explore that magnificent desert castle.
